Sentate Rejected Amendment to Freeze Federal Pay for 2013

Today, the Senate rejected an amendment to a Transportation bill, sponsored by Senator Pat Roberts (R-KS), that would have extended the federal employee pay freeze through 2013.

The amendment, which was defeated by a vote of 41 in favor to 57 against (60 votes were needed to pass), would have used the $26 billion in savings over 10 years from extending the freeze for a third consecutive year, to offset a broad range of tax cuts and energy policy changes.

NTEU sent a letter to every Senator strongly opposed the Roberts amendment, pointing out that federal employees have already done more than their fair share to contribute to our country’s financial problems. We will continue to oppose any effort to further cut federal pay and compensation.

I will keep you updated on any Congressional action that would affect federal pay and benefits. To get more information about NTEU’s legislative efforts, go to the Legislative Action Center at nteu.org.

NTEU Launches Website to Set Record Straight About Federal Employees

As the election season of 2012 gets underway, there again will be a wide variety of politicians, pundits and think tanks making grand statements and broad assertions about federal government employees. Far too often, these statements will be false. To set the record straight and keep the public informed, the National Treasury Employees Union (NTEU) is launching FederalEmployeeFacts.org, a website dedicated to correcting those who are all too willing to bend the truth when it comes to claims about the federal workforce.

“I wish a website like this was not necessary, but it is,” said NTEU National President Colleen M. Kelley. “Far too often, politicians and pundits are willing to sacrifice the truth and federal employees in the name of politics. We need to stand up and call them on their deceptions and distortions.”

The website will be updated whenever a politician, public figure or media report uses or publishes incorrect information about federal employees. The updates also will be posted on Twitter @NTEUNews
